  1. Doctor You Introducing the Hard Science of Self-Healing Doctor You: Introducing the Hard Science of Self-Healing by Jeremy Howick English | June 5th, 2018 | ISBN: 163506077X, 1635060788 | 304 pages | EPUB | 1.25 MB English | June 5th, 2018 | ISBN: 163506077X, 1635060788 | 304 pages | EPUB | 1.25 MB Award-winning Oxford University researcher Dr. Jeremy Howick draws on the latest peer-reviewed medical studies to arm readers with scientific evidence that will empower them to make sensible choices about what drugs to take, what drugs to give their children, and when (and when not) to simply let the body do its thing. "READ THIS BREAKTHROUGH BOOK!" -DEEPAK CHOPRA The miracles of modern medicine-and our overreliance on prescription drugs and surgical procedures-have obscured the evolutionary ability of the body to heal itself, as Dr. Jeremy Howick explains in this groundbreaking book. Wealthy countries have become highly dependent on medical intervention: On average, one-fifth of all Americans, half of the elderly British, and two-thirds of older Canadians take at least five prescription drugs per day, their lives a nonstop ritual of pill popping and managing side effects. One in ten people takes antidepressants, and millions of boys who can't sit still in school are prescribed methamphetamines. Skyrocketing global healthcare costs render this overmedication increasingly unaffordable. In Doctor You, Howick explains that the abundance of modern drugs and technologies has blinded us to the fact that the human body produces its own drugs that can treat pain, is capable of curing itself of many physical ailments as well as a surgeon, and can even combat most mild depression as well as any psychologist. Recent clinical trials clearly show that states of mind affect our health: relaxation, positive thinking, and comfortable social environments all provide measurable health benefits-sometimes as effectively as blockbuster drugs. With a methodical and approachable analysis of modern medicine's overuse of pharmaceutical intervention and the scientific evidence for your body's innate power to heal itself, Doctor You will change the way you think about your health, your body, and your approach to medicine. 5. Love Understood The Science of Who, How and Why We Love [Audiobook] Laura Mucha (Author, Narrator), "Love Understood: The Science of Who, How and Why We Love" ASIN: B07MWCTTHS | 2019 | [email protected] kbps| ~10:35:00 | 288 MB Poets, philosophers and artists have been trying to explain romantic love for centuries, but it remains one of the most complex and intimidating terrains to navigate. Most people have been afraid to be open and honest about their relationships...until now. For Love Understood, Laura Mucha has interviewed hundreds of strangers, from the ages of 8 to 95 in more than 40 countries, asking them to share their most personal stories, feelings and insights about love. These intimate and illuminating conversations raised important questions, such as: How does your upbringing influence your relationships? Does love at first sight exist? Should you 'just know'? What should you look for in a partner? Is monogamy natural? Why do people cheat? How do you know when it's time to walk away? Drawing on psychology, philosophy, anthropology and statistics, Love Understood combines evidence, theory and everyday experience and is the perfect listen for anyone who is curious about how we think, feel and behave when it comes to love. 6. Yoghurt Science and Technology, Second Edition Yoghurt: Science and Technology, Second Edition By A.Y. Tamime, A. Y. Tamine, R K Robinson, R.K. Robinson 1999 | 640 Pages | ISBN: 0849317851 | PDF | 5 MB Yoghurt: Science and Technology is a standard work in its field for both industry professionals and those involved in applied research. Because manufacture is still, essentially, a natural biological process, it remains difficult to control the quality of the final product. Such control depends on a thorough understanding of the nature of yoghurt and both the biochemical changes and process technologies involved in production. Yoghurt: Science and Technology provides just such an understanding.Since the last edition, the industry has been transformed by the introduction of mild-tasting "bio-yoghurts", changing both consumer markets and manufacturing practices. This new edition has been comprehensively revised to take on board this and another major developments in the industry. Thus, millions of gallons of yoghurt are produced each year, yet manufacture is still, in essence, a natural biological process in which success can never be taken for granted. It is this capricious nature of the fermentation that leaves the system prone to variation. So, though some aspects of production of yoghurt have become fairly standard, there are so many areas of potential difficulty. This book offers preliminary guidance on the intricacies of production and distribution of yoghurt so as to minimize product failure. 7. The Science of Cheese [Audiobook] Michael H. Tunick, Dennis Holland (Narrator), "The Science of Cheese" ASIN: B00REWL254, ISBN: 1522660275 | 2014 | [email protected] kbps | ~07:10:00 | 195 MB In an engaging tour of the science and history of cheese, Michael Tunick explores the art of cheese making, the science that lies underneath the deliciousness, and the history behind how humanity came up with one of its most varied and versatile of foods. Dr. Tunick spends his everyday deep within the halls of the science of cheese, as a researcher who creates new dairy products, primarily, cheeses. He takes us from the very beginning, some 8000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, and shows us the accidental discovery of cheese when milk separated into curds and whey. This stroke of luck would lead to a very mild, and something akin to cottage, cheese-deemed delicious enough by our traveling cheese maker that he or she did it again another day. Today we know of more than 2,000 varieties of cheese from Gorgonzola, first noted in year 879, to Roquefort in 1070 to Cheddar in 1500. But Tunick delves deeper into the subject to provide a wide-ranging overview that begins with cows and milk and then covers the technical science behind creating a new cheese, milk allergies and lactose intolerance, nutrition and why cheese is a vital part of a balanced diet. The Science of Cheese is an entertaining journey through one of America's favorite foods. 9. Borrowed Time The Science of How and Why We Age [Audiobook] Borrowed Time: The Science of How and Why We Age (Audiobook) by Sue Armstrong English | January 24, 2019 | ASIN: B07N14GH1J | [email protected] kbps | 8h 49m | 240 MB English | January 24, 2019 | ASIN: B07N14GH1J | [email protected] kbps | 8h 49m | 240 MB Narrator: Rachel Atkins The question of how and why organisms age has teased scientists for centuries. There are myriad competing theories, from the idea that ageing is a simple wear and tear process, like the rusting of a car, to the belief that ageing and death are genetically programmed and controlled. In fact, there is no clearly defined limit to life and no single, predictable program playing itself out: different things are happening within and between tissues, and each system or organ accumulates damage at its own pace, according to the kind of insults imposed on it by daily living. Sometime before 2020, the number of people over 65 worldwide will, for the first time, be greater than the number of 0-4 year olds; and by 2050 there are likely to be 2.5 times as many older people in the world as toddlers. Sue Armstrong tells the story of society's quest to understand ageing through the eyes of the scientists themselves as well as through the 'ordinary' people who exemplify the mysteries of ageing - from those who suffer from the premature ageing condition, Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, to people still running marathons in their 80s. Borrowed Time investigates such mind-boggling experiments as transfusing young blood into old rodents and research into transplanting the first human head, among many others. It explores where science is taking us and what issues are being raised from a psychological, philosophical and ethical perspective, through interviews with, and profiles of, key scientists in the field and the people who represent interesting and important aspects of ageing. 11. Volcanic Unrest From Science to Society Joachim Gottsmann and Jürgen Neuberg, "Volcanic Unrest: From Science to Society" English | ISBN: 3319584111 | 2019 | 324 pages | PDF, EPUB | 67 MB This book summarizes the findings of the VUELCO project, a multi-disciplinary and cross-boundary research funded by the European Commission's 7th framework program. It comprises four broad topics: 1. The global significance of volcanic unrest 2. Geophysical and geochemical fingerprints of unrest and precursory activity 3. Magma dynamics leading to unrest phenomena 4. Bridging the gap between science and decision-making Volcanic unrest is a complex multi-hazard phenomenon. The fact that unrest may, or may not lead to an imminent eruption contributes significant uncertainty to short-term volcanic hazard and risk assessment. Although it is reasonable to assume that all eruptions are associated with precursory activity of some sort, the understanding of the causative links between subsurface processes, resulting unrest signals and imminent eruption is incomplete. When a volcano evolves from dormancy into a phase of unrest, important scientific, political and social questions need to be addressed. This book is aimed at graduate students, researchers of volcanic phenomena, professionals in volcanic hazard and risk assessment, observatory personnel, as well as emergency managers who wish to learn about the complex nature of volcanic unrest and how to utilize new findings to deal with unrest phenomena at scientific and emergency managing levels. 12. Visualization Theory and Practice in Science Education Visualization: Theory and Practice in Science Education By John K. Gilbert (auth.), John K. Gilbert, Miriam Reiner, Mary Nakhleh (eds.) 2008 | 326 Pages | ISBN: 1402052669 | PDF | 9 MB External representations (pictures, diagrams, graphs, concrete models) have always been valuable tools for the science teacher. The formation of personal, internal, representations - visualizations - from them plays a key role in all learning, especially in that of science. The use of personal computers and sophisticated software has expanded into the areas of simulation, virtual reality, and animation, and students now engage in the creation of models, a key aspect of scientific methodology. Several academic disciplines underlie these developments, yet act independently of each other, to the detriment of an attainment of what is possible. This book brings together the insights of practicing scientists, science education researchers, computer specialists, and cognitive scientists, to produce a coherent overview. It links presentations about the cognitive theory of representation and visualization, its implications for science curriculum design, and for learning and teaching in classrooms and laboratories. Unsolved Mysteries of Science John Malone, "Unsolved Mysteries of Science" English | 2001 | ISBN: 0965328953 | PDF | pages: 241 | 2.0 mb A Mind-Expanding Journey through a Universe of Big Bangs, Particle Waves, and Other Perplexing Concepts. A lively exploration of the biggest questions in science. How Did the Universe Begin? The Big Bang has been the accepted theory for decades, but does it explain everything? How Did Life on Earth Get Started? What triggered the cell division that started the evolutionary chain? Did life come from outer space, buried in a chunk of rock? What is Gravity? Newton's apple just got the arguments started, Einstein made things more complicated. Just how does gravity fit in with quantum theory? What Is the Inside of the Earth Like? What exactly is happening beneath our feet, and can we learn enough to help predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions? How Do We Learn Language? Is language acquisition an inborn biological ability, or does every child have to start from scratch? Is There a Missing Link? The story of human evolution is not complete. In addition to hoaxes such as "Piltdown Man" and extraordinary finds such as "Lucy," many puzzles remain. What, in the end, do we mean by a "missing link"? 14. Universities and Science in the Early Modern Period Universities and Science in the Early Modern Period By Mordechai Feingold, Victor Navarro-Brotons (eds.) 2006 | 310 Pages | ISBN: 1402039743 | PDF | 2 MB The past two decades have witnessed a striking re evaluation of early modern institutions of higher learning as impoverished intellectual centers, hostile to new modes of thought. The present volume offers the most comprehensive synthesis to date of the fecundity of early modern universities, their receptivity to novel scientific ideas, and their contribution to the critical dialogue that vitalized the emergent European scientific community. The "soul" of the early modern university was its well-rounded, humanistically informed curriculum and the culture of erudition it inculcated. The authors of this volume offer a fresh assessment of how this course of study affected generations of natural philosophers, from the Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia, from Italy to Scotland, even as it was increasingly modified to accommodate the new science. The fresh evidence gathered here emphasizes just how rigorously science was pursued by academics, notwithstanding institutional constraints. Individually, each paper illustrates the nexus of complexities specific locales made on the reception and transmission of scientific ideas; collectively, the papers offer a comparative framework that should prove invaluable in our evaluating the profound changes undergone by early modern universities during the era of Scientific Revolution. 15. Understanding Mathematics and Science Matters Understanding Mathematics and Science Matters By Thomas A. Romberg, Thomas P. Carpenter, Fae Dremock 2005 | 348 Pages | ISBN: 0805846948 | PDF | 19 MB The research reported in this book provides reliable evidence on and knowledge about mathematics and science instruction that emphasizes student understandinginstruction consistent with the needs of students who will be citizens in an increasingly demanding technological world. The National Center for Improving Student Learning in Mathematics and Scienceestablished in 1996 as a research center and funded by the U.S. Department of Educationwas instrumental in developing instructional practices supportive of high student achievement in and understanding of mathematics and science concepts. NCISLA researchers worked with teachers, students, and administrators to construct learning environments that exemplify current research and theory about effective learning of mathematics and science. The careful programs of research conducted examined how instructional content and design, assessment, professional development, and organizational support can be designed, implemented, and orchestrated to support the learning of all students. This book presents a summary of the concepts, findings, and conclusions of the Center's research from 1996-2001.In the Introduction, the chapters in Understanding Mathematics and Science Matters are situated in terms of the reform movement in school mathematics and school science. Three thematically structured sections focus on, respectively, research directed toward what is involved when students learn mathematics and science with understanding; research on the role of teachers and the problems they face when attempting to teach their students mathematics and science with understanding; and a collaboration among some of the contributors to this volume to gather information about classroom assessment practices and organizational support for reform. The goal of this book is to help educational practitioners, policymakers, and the general public to see the validity of the reform recommendations, understand the recommended guidelines, and to use these to transform teaching and learning of mathematics and science in U.S. classrooms. The thinking rat The new science of animal learning The thinking rat: The new science of animal learning by Oskar Pineño English | 2010 | ISBN: 1450580424 | 198 Pages | PDF | 2.7 MB English | 2010 | ISBN: 1450580424 | 198 Pages | PDF | 2.7 MB For more than a century, the albino rat has been the standard subject in psychological research. Among other reasons, the rat was thought to be the perfect animal model of human behavior due to the presumed simplicity of its behavior, considered to be mechanistically controlled by the environment and, thus, free from the unnecessary complication caused by the influence of mental processes. In the last few years, a series of critical experiments have been conducted to understand the rat's mental abilities, finding evidence of sophisticated cognitive processes - some of which previously believed to be exclusively human. The rat, it turns out, is a good animal model of human cognition as well; its behavior is no more "reflexive" than it is "reflective". This book tells the story of the albino rat in the psychology laboratory, and how recent studies in animal cognition have changed our perception of its mental life. This is the story of the thinking rat. 19. The View from Above The Science of Social Space Jeanne Haffner and Peter Galison, "The View from Above: The Science of Social Space" English | ISBN: 0262018799 | 2013 | 208 pages | PDF | 53 MB The role of aerial photography in the evolution of the concept of social space"and its impact on French urban planning in the mid-twentieth century. In mid-twentieth century France, the term "social space" (l'espace social)-the idea that spatial form and social life are inextricably linked-emerged in a variety of social science disciplines. Taken up by the French New Left, it also came to inform the practice of urban planning. In The View from Above, Jeanne Haffner traces the evolution of the science of social space from the interwar period to the 1970s, illuminating in particular the role of aerial photography in this new way of conceptualizing socio-spatial relations. As early as the 1930s, the view from above served for Marcel Griaule and other anthropologists as a means of connecting the social and the spatial. Just a few decades later, the Marxist urban sociologist Henri Lefebvre called the perspective enabled by aerial photography-a technique closely associated with the French colonial state and military-"the space of state control." Lefebvre and others nevertheless used the notion of social space to recast the problem of massive modernist housing projects (grands ensembles) to encompass the modern suburb (banlieue) itself-a critique that has contemporary resonance in light of the banlieue riots of 2005 and 2007. Haffner shows how such "views" permitted new ways of conceptualizing the old problem of housing to emerge. She also points to broader issues, including the influence of the colonies on the metropole, the application of sociological expertise to the study of the built environment, and the development of a spatially oriented critique of capitalism. 20. The Present Situation in the Philosophy of Science The Present Situation in the Philosophy of Science By Thomas Uebel (auth.), Friedrich Stadler (eds.) 2010 | 325 Pages | ISBN: 9048191149 | PDF | 4 MB This volume is a serious attempt to open up the subject of European philosophy of science to real thought, and provide the structural basis for the interdisciplinary development of its specialist fields, but also to provoke reflection on the idea of 'European philosophy of science'. This efforts should foster a contemporaneous reflection on what might be meant by philosophy of science in Europe and European philosophy of science, and how in fact awareness of it could assist philosophers interpret and motivate their research through a stronger collective identity. The overarching aim is to set the background for a collaborative project organising, systematising, and ultimately forging an identity for, European philosophy of science by creating research structures and developing research networks across Europe to promote its development. As such under the general rubric of 'the present situation in the philosophy of science', the emphasis is on as a first step identifying traditions and research structures already present, and the directions in which this research was leading. The European perspective in philosophy of science is the inclusion of the historical roots of current debates and the focus on methodological problems that cross the various sub-disciplines. This historical dimension is complemented by the evident broad scope of European philosophy of science which embodies not only a strong tradition of history and philosophy of science, history of philosophy of science, but also philosophy with respect to the cultural and social sciences as part of (not separate to) the discipline, combined with more traditional philosophical issues and approaches, such as the application of formal methods, the problem of realism, determinism and chance or the natural kinds debate. This consideration of general philosophical questions in science is married to a strong tradition of engaging naturalistically with the particular philosophical issues in individual sciences where there exists a prerogative of being closely schooled in the relevant scientific theory and research context. Additionally, one can refer to particular positions, like 'structural realism', as 'European', having their origin and their centre of pursuit, and indeed their historical links, in the context of European research. 21. The Philosophy of Science A Companion The Philosophy of Science : A Companion English | 2018 | ISBN: 019069064X | 764 Pages | PDF | 6.57 MB by Anouk Barberousse and Denis Bonnay English | 2018 | ISBN: 019069064X | 764 Pages | PDF | 6.57 MB Philosophy of science studies the methods, theories, and concepts used by scientists. It mainly developed as a field in its own right during the twentieth century and is now a diversified and lively research area. This book surveys the current state of the discipline by focusing on central themes like confirmation of scientific hypotheses, scientific explanation, causality, the relationship between science and metaphysics, scientific change, the relationship between philosophy of science and science studies, the role of theories and models, unity of science. These themes define general philosophy of science. The book also presents sub-disciplines in the philosophy of science dealing with the main sciences: logic, mathematics, physics, biology, medicine, cognitive science, linguistics, social sciences, and economics. While it is common to address the specific philosophical problems raised by physics and biology in such a book, the place assigned to the philosophy of special sciences is much more unusual. Most authors collaborate on a regular basis in their research or teaching and share a common vision of philosophy of science and its place within philosophy and academia in general. The chapters have been written in close accordance with the three editors, thus achieving strong unity of style and tone. 22. The Philosophy of Cognitive Science Mark J. Cain, "The Philosophy of Cognitive Science" ISBN: 0745646565, 0745646573 | 2015 | EPUB | 256 pages | 1011 KB In recent decades cognitive science has revolutionised our understanding of the workings of the human mind. Philosophy has made a major contribution to cognitive science and has itself been hugely influenced by its development. This dynamic book explores the philosophical significance of cognitive science and examines the central debates that have enlivened its history. In a wide-ranging and comprehensive account of the topic, philosopher M.J. Cain discusses the historical origins of cognitive science and its philosophical underpinnings; the nature and role of representations in cognition; the architecture of the mind and the modularity thesis; the nature of concepts; knowledge of language and its acquisition; perception; and the relationship between the brain and cognition. Cain draws upon an extensive knowledge of empirical developments and their philosophical interpretation. He argues that although the field has generated some challenging new views in recent years, many of the core ideas that initiated its birth are still to be taken seriously. Clearly written and incisively argued, The Philosophy of Cognitive Science will appeal to any student or researcher interested in the workings of the mind. 23. The Pentateuch A Social-Science Commentary The Pentateuch: A Social-Science Commentary By John Van Seters 1999 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 0567080889 | PDF | 13 MB This overview of the Pentateuch reviews the various historical-critical attempts to read it that arise from notions about the social evolution of Israel's religion and culture. Is the Pentateuch an accumulation of folk traditions, a work of ancient historiography, a document legitimizing religious reform? The present book, in dialogue with competing views, advocates a compositional model that recognizes the social and historical diversity of the literary strata. It argues that a proto-Pentateuchal author created a comprehensive history from Genesis to Numbers that was written as a prologue to the Deuteronomistic History (Deuteronomy to 2 Kings) in the exilic period and later expanded by a Priestly writer to make it the foundational document of the Jerusalem temple community.
